How to Secure Boom Lifts for Safe Transport

A boom lift can arrive at a job site ready to work or arrive with damaged rails, stressed components, and a delayed schedule. The difference often comes down to how it was loaded and restrained. Knowing how to secure boom lifts correctly protects a high-value machine, the transport crew, other drivers, and the project timeline.

Boom lifts are not loads to “strap down and hope for the best.” Their height, weight distribution, articulation, and moving parts require deliberate planning. The right securement method depends on the lift model, trailer capacity, travel route, and manufacturer instructions. What does not change is the need for proper equipment, rated tie-downs, and a final inspection before the truck moves.

Start With the Boom Lift and Trailer

Securement begins before the lift touches the trailer. Confirm the machine’s operating weight, overall dimensions, ground clearance, and designated tie-down points. This information is found in the operator’s manual and on the equipment identification plate. Do not estimate weight based on the size of the lift. A compact electric boom and a diesel articulating boom can look similar from a distance while requiring very different transport setups.

Match the trailer to the load. Its deck length, ramps, axle rating, breakaway system, tires, and cargo anchor points must be suitable for the lift. The truck and trailer combination also needs adequate towing and braking capacity for the total loaded weight. A trailer that is technically large enough but poorly balanced can still create dangerous sway, poor braking, or axle overload.

Before loading, inspect the deck for oil, mud, loose debris, damaged boards, and anything that could reduce tire grip. Check the ramps and ramp angle as well. If the angle is too steep for the lift’s clearance, the platform or underside can strike during loading. Low clearance and wet conditions are a bad combination, especially after Southwest Florida rain.

Prepare the Lift for Transport

The boom lift should be stowed in its transport position before it is loaded. Lower the boom fully, retract or fold it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and center the turntable where required. Lower the platform and secure any platform gate, tools, materials, or loose accessories.

Keep the key and controls managed by the loading operator until the lift is in position. Once it is parked on the trailer, turn it off, remove the key, and engage the parking brake. If the lift has a transport lock, swing lock, or other manufacturer-provided restraint, use it as intended. These features control machine movement, but they do not replace external tie-downs.

Pay close attention to the battery compartment, fuel cap, hydraulic lines, and tires. A visible hydraulic leak, low tire, or unsecured battery cover can become a bigger problem after miles of vibration. Fix the issue before departure rather than planning to watch it on the road.

Load for Proper Weight Distribution

Drive the boom lift slowly and straight onto the trailer. Avoid sharp steering corrections on ramps, and use a spotter when sightlines are limited. The spotter should stand where the operator can see them, never between the machine and a fixed object or directly downhill from the load.

Place the lift to achieve safe tongue weight and balanced axle loading. In many cases, that means positioning the heavier end of the machine slightly forward of the trailer axles, but the exact placement depends on the lift and trailer. Too much weight behind the axles can cause trailer sway. Too much forward weight can overload the truck’s rear axle, reduce steering control, and strain the hitch.

Do not assume that centered on the deck means balanced. Once the lift is positioned, look at suspension squat, trailer attitude, and tire loading. If the truck or trailer is sitting unevenly, stop and correct the placement before securing the machine.

Use Rated Tie-Downs at Designated Points

The most reliable answer to how to secure boom lifts is to use the lift’s designated tie-down points and properly rated chains, binders, or other approved securement devices. Tie-down points are engineered to handle restraint forces. Handrails, guardrails, axles, boom sections, and platform components are not substitutes unless the manufacturer specifically identifies them for transport securement.

Use enough tie-downs to restrain the boom lift against forward, rearward, and side-to-side movement. Federal cargo securement rules and the lift manufacturer’s instructions should guide the number, placement, and working load limit of your equipment. In practical terms, heavy equipment is commonly secured at four points, with restraint applied in opposing directions to keep the machine from shifting under braking, acceleration, turns, or rough pavement.

Chains and binders are often preferred for heavier boom lifts because they resist abrasion and maintain control under load. Heavy-duty ratchet straps may be appropriate for certain machines when their working load limit, condition, and manufacturer guidance support their use. The deciding factor is not convenience. It is whether the complete securement system is rated and suitable for the machine’s weight and transport conditions.

Inspect every chain, hook, binder, strap, and anchor point before use. Remove damaged gear from service. Bent hooks, stretched chain links, frayed webbing, cracked welds, and binders that will not lock properly are reasons to stop. A tie-down is only as dependable as its weakest component.

Tighten Without Damaging the Machine

Apply tension evenly. The goal is to hold the lift firmly against movement without crushing hoses, bending structural parts, or pulling the machine out of its normal resting position. Keep chains and straps clear of hydraulic lines, electrical cables, and sharp edges. Use edge protection where a strap could chafe.

After tightening, lock each binder and secure the handle so vibration cannot release it. Tie off excess strap material so it cannot flap, drag, or become caught in a wheel. Confirm that every hook is fully seated and that no tie-down is twisted or rubbing against a vulnerable component.

Chock Wheels and Check Moving Components

Tie-downs restrain the load. Wheel chocks add another layer of control, especially while loading, unloading, or staging on a grade. Place chocks snugly against the tires and use chocks designed for the tire size and load. They are not a replacement for rated securement, but they help limit rolling if a brake does not hold as expected.

Check the boom and platform one more time. The boom should be fully stowed, the platform should be secured, and any removable items should be stored separately or restrained. A loose platform tray, detachable control box, or set of job-site materials can become road debris even when the lift itself stays put.

Perform a Road-Ready Inspection

Before leaving, walk around the entire truck, trailer, and boom lift. This last check should be methodical, not rushed. Confirm the following:

  • The lift is centered and the trailer is level enough for safe handling.

  • All tie-downs are rated, tight, locked, and attached to approved points.

  • Wheel chocks, ramps, tools, and loose accessories are secured.

  • Trailer lights, brakes, tires, hitch components, and safety chains are in working order.

  • The machine’s boom, platform, doors, and covers are stowed and latched.

Check securement again shortly after starting the trip, then at regular stops and after rough-road sections. Chains can settle, straps can lose tension, and a load can shift slightly as the trailer flexes. A two-minute inspection can prevent a costly recovery, equipment damage, or a roadside hazard.

Know When Professional Equipment Transport Is the Better Call

Some moves are straightforward. Others involve oversized lifts, long distances, tight job-site access, emergency recovery, or trailers that are not built for the machine.
